About the artist: John Shlapak (1926-2017) was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. During World War II S/Sgt. Shlapak served as a tail gunner on B-24 Liberator bombers with the U.S. 15th Air Force, 450th Bombardment Group (H) (a.k.a. "The Cottontails"), 720th Squadron based in Manduria, Italy. He later served in Korea with the U.S. Air Force. John was a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, taught art in Pennsylvania and Georgia, worked as a designer for Brockway Glass Co. and served as art director for the Westinghouse Motion Picture Division. His award-winning work is displayed at various government buildings and at art galleries and studios throughout the United States. One of his more famous paintings is "Destiny Deb," which features B-24 Liberators flying into the bowels of the enemy over the fiery ruins of Ploesti Oil Fields in Rumania.
